The Story of the Blessed Virgin and the Ladybird Beetle

Farmers rely on their crops to sell, feed their families, and feed other people. The farmers work hard. They pray for fertile soil, sunshine, and rain so their crops may grow. Pests destroy crops and then people all over go without food!

In the Middle Ages there were many pests eating up farmers crops. This was very upsetting to all the people! Where would their food come from. What would happen to them? The people began to pray. They called out to Our Blessed Mother to pray to God for them, that the pests may be destroyed and the crops saved.

The Lord heard their cry and at through the intercession of Our Lady, the pests that were destroying the crops were being eaten up by small beetles with red wings and black dots! The farmers named the new bugs “Lady Beetles” to honor the Blessed Mother. The red wings show Mary’s cloak, and the 7 spots represent the 7 joys and the 7 sorrows of Our Lady.
