Description: Original Catholic Illustration in a vintage inspired style created by me, Jennifer. Watercolor, ink, and colored pencils come together to tell a story of Mary in the Old Testament, the story of Mary as the New Eve. I painted the original on 11×14” Bristol Board out of a love for the old revealing the new, awe at God’s love for us, and the beauty of the Blessed Mother’s role in Salvation History. I base this collection heavily upon my inspiration from the public domain work Mary Foreshadowed, which I have found to be beautiful, inspiring, and a great resourcing for growing closer to Christ through Mary. This painting has been a labor of love, and joy, which I have worked on for several hours, continuously adding and adjusting as new ideas come! Please pray for Rev. Father Thaddeus, whose work inspired this work.
What is Marian Typology? Marian Typology is a continuity from the Old Testament to the New Testament where someone or something from the Old Testament is perfected in the New Testament. Mary foretold throughout the Old Testament prepares our hearts for her “fiat” and her Son in the New Testament! Simply put, Marian Typology is the idea that Our Lady is prefigured in the Old Testament. This first piece focuses on Eve as a type for Mary.
How is Mary portrayed as the New Eve in this original Catholic Art Print? Mary is portrayed as the New Eve all throughout this work! I have tried to include details that will resonate with adults and children alike, in a light hearted, soft, and vintage style, that shows the connection between Mary and Eve. I intended the painting to be read from left to right. We begin after Eve’s sin which brings death and damnation to the world. Eve’s children are all now at the receiving end of the rotten fruit of her disobedience, and she is surrounded by a boarder of dead trees, twigs, vines, snow, and ice. I kept her hair is long and uncovered. The clothing was inspired by Fra Angelico’s depiction of Eve in The Annunciation. The clothing itself is tattered and torn to show her distress. She used to be one with God, she was the mother of the living, and she had paradise. The tree behind her is dead and bears no fruit, and the ground is cold and icy. Eve tosses the forbidden fruit, which false pleasures lasted only for a moment. Her feet walk towards The Blessed Mother. As she touches her the snake flees from her. A nimbus begins to form around her head indicating she is redeemed after contrition, penance, and death. The Blessed Virgin holds Eve with a full halo, in fine clothing, and crushes the serpent under her feet, as promised by God the Father in Genesis. She holds an apple at her womb, symbolizing the perfect fruit, as she is carrying the Christ Child within her. I painted Mother Mary surrounded by life, greenery, warmth, and sunshine, as the rays of the Holy Ghost cast down lovingly upon her. She has found favor with God and truly she is the Mother of the Living. We see that Eve said No to God with her sin, and Mary said Yes to God with her “fiat”. Eve came from Adam, Mary births the Second Adam. Through Christ Mary brings salvation to all her children, where as Eve through sin brings death. Both Mary and Eve were created in innocence and holiness, however Mary’s holiness could not be tarnished! I added bunnies, birds and flowers symbolic of the Blessed Virgin surround her, as peace radiates from her complete and total union with the Will of the Lord.
